Mobilizing cutting-edge research

The CAISI Research Program at CIFAR serves as an independent scientific research engine. We are charged with mobilizing the nation’s AI safety experts across disciplines to address the complex sociotechnical challenges of advanced AI systems.

In November 2024, the Government of Canada launched the Canadian AI Safety Institute (CAISI) to support the safe and responsible development and deployment of AI, with the goal of fostering AI innovation through public trust.

CAISI is led by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) and leverages the research capabilities of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the broader Canadian research community through a research program led by CIFAR. The CAISI Research Program at CIFAR is funded by a $27 million contribution from the Government of Canada.

AI Safety Partners

CIFAR is a Canadian-based global research organization. For over 40 years, CIFAR has mobilized the world’s top researchers to address society’s most pressing challenges.

Recognized as a cornerstone of national innovation, CIFAR was appointed to lead the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy (2017) and the Canadian AI Safety Institute (CAISI) Research Program (2024). These mandates cement CIFAR’s position at the vanguard of global AI development, talent cultivation, and technical leadership. In executing the CAISI Research Program, CIFAR is proud to collaborate with Canada’s three national AI institutes—Amii, Mila, and the Vector Institute.

Our work in the program is driven by the collective dedication of Canada’s AI safety research community. We are grateful to the Government of Canada and ISED for their investment in safety research and talent. Our progress is further amplified by a network of partners, including the National Research Council of Canada, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the UK AI Security Institute, as well as many other global collaborators committed to securing a beneficial AI future.
